Where Did This Belief Come From?

The exact origins are difficult to pin down, but several historical threads seem to have woven together over time.

Cats have long been viewed with a mixture of admiration and suspicion. In ancient Egypt, they were revered and associated with the goddess Bastet. However, attitudes shifted considerably in medieval Europe.

During the witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries, cats, particularly black ones, became strongly associated with witchcraft. People believed that witches could transform into black cats or use them as familiars, which were spirit companions thought to help carry out magical tasks. A black cat wandering the streets at night could therefore be viewed as a witch in disguise or a witch's servant on some sinister errand.

This association stuck. Even as formal accusations of witchcraft faded from legal systems, the wariness around black cats remained embedded in popular superstition. The colour black itself has long carried associations with darkness, death and the unknown, which likely reinforced these negative perceptions. Today, black cats feature prominently in Halloween imagery and decorations, keeping this spooky connection alive in popular culture, even if mostly in jest.

Black Cats in Modern Britain

Today, most people treat the superstition as a bit of fun rather than a genuine concern. However, it does have some real world consequences that are less amusing.

Animal rescue organisations across the UK, including the RSPCA and Cats Protection, have reported that black cats can take longer to rehome than cats of other colours. This trend appears to be influenced by multiple factors, including lingering superstition and the practical challenge of photographing dark fur for adoption listings. Some shelters have run campaigns specifically to encourage adoption of black cats, highlighting that coat colour has no bearing on a cat's personality or behaviour.

From a practical standpoint, there is nothing to suggest that black cats bring any more or less luck than cats of any other colour. They are simply cats with a particular genetic makeup that produces dark fur.

For about 6 months i kept seeing cats crossing the road whilst i was working in care in the cimmunity the cats were mostly black they would alway be on my side of the road just about to cross to the other side never the other way round it was always about 100 ft away day . It started to freak me out i googled it and itvsaud it was a bad omen . Then about 2 months after my dad and nan died within a week of each other thats was about 2 months ago .. i have not seen a cat cross my path since across the road .. i find this very very strange

Actually it used be that white cats were bad luck (probably more to do with alot of pure white cats being deaf). Black cats crossing your path used be good luck. As part of the witch hunts and spread of Christianity certain things were changed in societies minds and one of those was that the black cat became the witches familiar (insert healer bachelorette unusual woman pet) and it became an ill omen or sign of demons.

This morning at 6 AM, I woke up from physical sounds from the desk near my bed.
something was moving the honey-cup that was empty..
these sounds only came from the plastic foam on the cup..

these little cups are used for a small dosage of honey

there was no wind of mouse in the room..

the sounds did not stop at all, so somthing ghost-like was moving the small honey-cup.

when i turned the lights on it stopped..

immediatly opened the curtains at the window, and then I saw A black cat walking away from my window..

We dont even have Cats here in the area walking arround..

can someone please Tell me what this means..

I have alot of unhappyniss in my main core, beause bad luck always took a grasp at my chances..and now I just discovered that I have a signicant financial dept too...

Way back long time ago, i heard this with my parents that my mom was about to give labor to me. They rush to hospital at 12midnight the streets are so strange it is a bad weather and no people around. On their way to a certain part of the street some thing was thrown on them its like we used in a bath and then a black cath passing on thier way. My mom got hard time delivery on me as i was 9.5 pounds she got goiter after she took birth on me. I think so that i was bad luck to the family

My husband has Indian in him and he seems to believe that black cats are cute and you can pet a cat 3 times without a problem, but he also believes that if your find yourself in a bad neighborhood and you see a black cat on every corner that it is a bad omen. Also every time you go ahead and cross a black cats path anyway you will have something bad happen to you in the next 24 hours unless you put a crucifix on the ground where it crossed and say a prayer of protection by shedding the blood of the Lamb over you and your car. I've heard of people putting x's on the ground but he said it is not an ex it is a crucifix and you just say a prayer to Jesus for protection. But if it's like that I wouldn't even go where the cat crossed my path and I would also say a prayer. That's just my opinion. As far as killing the cats I think that that is wrong. He said you can have them as a pet but if you're out and about on a bike ride or driving your car or taking a walk and one looks at you and beans you with his eyes and comes across your path that you should go the other way because it's bad luck.

1st time a black cat crossed my path a few days later 3 bad things happened:
1. My car got robbed from my driveway
2. Lost my most paying job of 6 and half years
3. My son died.

2nd time a black cat crossed my path:

1. My daughter's vertigo returned and she could not attend work and she could not conduct an important presentation and almost lost her job.
2. A few days later my daughter died.

Should I be afraid when it happens next time?

may 15th the sun was setting .I was driving my friend home from the store and a black cat crossed in front of me from my left to my right . .I didn't want to think it was bad luck,.so I tried not to think to much about it . a hour after I got home I split my head open and was rushed to the hospital for stiches. . this makes you think ... YES it maybe true about a black cat crossing your path ,will it bring bad luck .or just a black cat crossing the road . I am pretty sure I have not had a white cat cross in front of me while driving or any other color .only black .why is that .

@Insightisright - that's nice. My black cat runs to meet my car, it knows the sound of my engine. Perhaps this cat knows the sound of your engine and is coming to meet you too. Cats are quite sociable and perhaps it hasn't always been feral. Perhaps it still likes to know that human contact is near. You might be the cat's go to/favourite 'person' without realising. It might be escorting you to your home.

I have to drive down an alley way to access the parking spot I have where I live. There is this really adorable young black cat that is a feral cat and inadvertently this cat always runs ahead of me and crosses my path, whether I walk or whether I drive.
The thing is I don't feel it's good luck or bad luck; I just feel like I'm meeting some aspect of myself. This may mean a part of myself that is the black sheep..or has to hide out from the mainstream..
I don't actually feel that luck is so flighty that something like a cat crossing your path actually affects your luck. I believe in Omens but this isn't a bad Omen it's the universe communicating something to me.

@Laila - what happens if you live with a black cat, does that mean you have bad luck all the time. I have three and they cross my path always. Also, in some cultures black cats are seen as lucky omens. It's just a coincidence your mum died (sorry :()and a coincidence you lost your job. You shouldn't hold so much store in superstitions. We can find anything we want in anything if we want to.

Very true..i believe that when black cats cross your path..bad things can happen to you or a person you care for. This is because it happened to me twice. The first time was in 2005. I saw a black cat crossing my path for almost 6 months..as I left the supermarket...to the cinema...you name it...it freaked me out because it was almost everyday and for six months...until my mother died. Once she died I never saw a black again until in 2015. This time it was almost a year I continued to see a black cat crossing my path and in Sept 2016 I lost my job. Since then I stopped seeing a black cat. I am really afraid to have to see a black cat again...what worse then this could happen.

So I saw a black cat that apparently was trying to cross the road in front of someone. It didn't make it. So, if it is bad luck in the USA and European countries to have a black cat cross your path, does that mean if you kill it before it makes it, you now have staved off that bad luck? Ultimately the bad luck is on the cat though

This morning I was driving my car a black cat ran a crossed the road safely front of me. My daughter said it's bad luck oh no is it? Worried I had enough of bad luck atm my washing machine broke down couple days ago and it's fixed now my amazing boyfriend broke up with me a month ago ..... :(

@Sam, black cats of a night are difficult to see. They can get into the smallest of spaces, so it might be going somewhere or between a gap you don't know even exists. Ellie

I have seen this black cat twice. Once by a tree in my neighbors yard. I came outside let my dog out it just stopped and starred at me then 3 days later I go to the back yard and the cat is sitting in my yard starring at me. What does that mean

I left my house this morning to drive my daughter to her bus stop. Firstly a black cat walked across the road in front of us, then further on 2 magpies were in the middle of the road feasting on road-kill. At this point my daughter salutes. On correcting her saying that you only salute one magpie, one flew away and I run the other over. Now thats bad luck!!

Was driving with my sister when a black cat stopped in front of my car and turned its head and stared at us for a few seconds then continued to walk in front of the car, stop, and look back at us. Since then I have broke glass in my room, spilled baby detergent in the car, and just wrecked the back of my moms car. Was my very first accident....I think this has everything to do with this black cat.

Late night at 11:45pm, I just arrived home from catching Pokemons. I was thrilled as I saw a black cat behind me while opening the door. With the wrong key on the door, I was frightened so I just stood there as if I was a statue. It's devil looking eyes staring. Goosebumps..............

Tonight, I was going to the gym after a few months of lazyness. It was goin fairly well even though I felt a bit weaker than usual, nothing strange after being away for so long I thought.. until I hit the shower. As i looked down my hand was covered in blood, running from my nose. I never have nosebleeds but thought nothing of it. But suddenly I start feeling really ill and about to pass out, so I got out of the shower to the locker room. Looking in the mirror I was all pale-gray, and had to sit down on the floor before passing out. It kept getting worse so I lay down on the floor, all naked feeling like i was dieing. I started sweating profusely, and felt a tingling sensation in my left arm, and started worrying it was some heart failure or stroke or something. Im 36 years old so I dont wanna die butt naked in a gym. It was late and I was the only one there too, and for once I hadnt brought my phone with me. Anyway, I had to lie there for a good 45 mins after the gym had closed for the night, before my head stopped spinning and my legs would hold me. I then managed to get my things in my pack and slowly walk out on very shaky legs. I live just a few hundred meters from the gym, and as I walked the last bit thru an alley of trees, I see a black cat sitting at the end of the road, staring at me without moving. As I came closer the cat got up, and walked towards me, stopping in the middle of the road, and just then the dieing light of the summer sun reflected in its eyes, like fires. Just what I need, I thought chuckling to myself. After a moment the cat looked away, and continued to cross my path and dissapeared into the forest. Now im not a superstitious man, at all, but with those circumstances I couldnt help feeling somewhat unnerved by it, wich is why I looked it up and ended up here. Didnt help me that the gym closes at 11pm, so the time must have been right about 12 o clock when I met the black cat. Guess Ill hope for it to be a good sign if any, just didnt feel that way at the time. I swear its all true and im still feeling really weak, 4 hours later, lets see how long I last :)

I had a black cat, that lives up on the local farm, run right in front of my new car 20 minutes after I had scrapped the right hand side of it on a pillar in a car park.

I sore it in advance, and had eye to eye with it before it ran right in front of the car.

Now go figure, haha. Odd, weird with destroying the right hand door and skirting on my new motor an hour after I picked it up, then nearly running over that darn black cat from the farm.

Bad cats are demon ?
Its a cheap thinking brought by our ancestors.Probably the thinking doesnt gives any sense or logic with it.
Luck is what we beilive. If we will beilive that if cat will cross us, it will be a unlucky day so,it will be. But if we will think the opposite, so we will have a lucky day.
So just ignore this. Stay fine and beilive yourself and your luck depends upon your thinking.. :-)

@ A, black cats are not demons, they're mammals just like us, except from a different family. It's really cruel and totally unnecessary to hit or in any way hurt them. They're not dangerous to us. Your family member is right, and so is Ellie who replied to you before. If you don't like them, just ignore them or walk away from them when they approach.

@A - apart from anything, it is cruel to hurt an animal by hitting it and is not a very nice thing to do. Nothing will happen to you, but the poor animal may suffer. Black cats will not harm you, or anyone else, many people keep them as pets and enjoy them. Try to be kinder.

I have a black cat with green eyes, and a tuxedo cat with yellow eyes. Owned them for over a year and raised them since they were young. I still have a job, haven't got into accidents, with the woman of my dreams, and I'm in line for a promotion. Even if anything bad did happen to me I wouldn't blame my cats. Only thing I do believe in is karma, hard work and dedication.

It isn't my path until I have traversed it. Therefore, to cross my path the cat would have to cross where I have already walked not where I am about to walk and would be behind me and most likely not seen by me. If the cat crosses in front of me then I am the one crossing his path.

As I was picking up a pre k student on my school bus this a.m., a black cat hid near my back tires and I accidentally ran over it. I never saw it go under my bus. I heard a yelp and my heart just sank. I feel terrible about this, as I am an animal lover.

The color of the cat doesn't tell you it is good or bad luck, it doesn't matter because is not scientifically proven; if someday to a cousin to a friend sees a black cat and then has bad or good luck, it does not meen that it will happen with you, is just coincidence.

A young black female cat has taken occupation in my house about 4 days ago, she wont go and she wont leave me alone, she keepa purring and rubbing herself against me. Ive never been to fond of cats but this one surely found me, and I guess shes staying.

@steph - I would not worry, a dream is just a dream and means absolutely nothing and neither does a black cat crossing your path. I have a black cat that crosses my path every day because it lives in the same house as me and I've never had any bad luck, only good luck.

So last night on my way home from school a black cat ran out in front of my car, I almost but did not hit the cat, and this morning my brother tells me he had a dream I was shot five times, then my son says he had a dream we went to the zoo and all the animals attacked me, I really am freaking out here.

I have had the worst day today and seen a pychic, Ive come out of a really bad relationship and have a VRO on him. I was just driving home and a black cat was about to cross the road but I came n it curled itself up against the kurb and went around the back of the car, I am so hoping this is good luck that it didn't cross my path.

From my experience over the years the black cats that have crossed my path have basically given insight into the coming year. A family of black cats crossed in front of my car Weeks before I found out I was pregnant with my first born. I've had fat healthy ones which were good fruitful years and noticed when the skinny sickly one crossed out was a difficult year. My cousin has a big fat one. Him and the healthy young outside one are the only two I've encountered this year. I hoping this year is just as fat, healthy and happy as these two. Never heard of the white cat thing. But off that's the case I hope the 2 black cats cancel out the mean whit cat that's here. Most importantly is the last statement. Make your own luck. Lol!

I just want to know, I have been living with superstition all my life. 1. I never split poles, its bad luck. 2. When a black cat ever cross my path, whether walking or driving, I turn around and go the other way. 3. I do not like stepping on the cracks in the sidewalk, apparently that's bad luck. 4. Am I just living in the wrong life? As far as actually believing what the old folks use to say back in the day? I mean, what is it?

I heard it was also lucky for a black cat to cross your path, was from the black death era, when sailors and people who traveled to Asia bringing cats home, communities faired better and suffered less from the black death if cats we're owned locally, so seeing a black cat made people feel safer knowing cats we're about, hence the good luck if one crossed your path keeping the rats at-bay!!

A black cat ran across the path of the car we were driving along a straight clear road in the middle of no where, not even a house close by , a week later my brother sadly took his own life, the cat by the way is still out there, because my partner slammed on her brakes missing it.At the time we even joked saying we were going to have bad luck.

My dog is really ill at the mo, I was in the kitchen makin a cup of tea and noticed a black cat on our fence looking at me through the window meowing, we've never seen a cat around our way before especially in our garden. Is this a sign letting us know our dogs not got long left? Thanks.

Thank you for helping me with my speech I had to write a speech on a superstition and I chose the one about walking under a ladder and the origin is very interesting.
